Stepan Liubimov is a director, cinematographer and editor working in both narrative and documentary filmmaking. Born in Russia, Liubimov chose to continue his filmmaking career in the United States in order to work within a broader landscape of independent artistic production. For more than a decade, he has developed an approach grounded in close collaboration, long takes, and attention to how artists use space, sound, and movement, allowing each project to determine its own visual language.
He is the founder and executive producer of VIDEO FOR ART, a production company that creates films for independent artists, theaters, museums, and other cultural institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Bronx Museum, AUTOMAT Collective in Philadelphia, and Pioneer Works, Brooklyn. His films include A Dedication to the Teacher, a portrait of ballet coach Lyudmila Kovaleva in Saint Petersburg; The Imaginary Museum of Mikhail Shemyakin: 60 Years of Research, a documentary about the artist’s lifelong project exploring visual archetypes across cultures and centuries through comparative analysis of art; The Courier, a portrait of artists in the time of Covid, which received the Grand Prix at the Bordeaux Documentary Film Festival; and White Point, an experimental dance film and finalist at the Context Dance Film Festival.
Liubimov has produced dozens of films in Russia, France, Germany, and across the US and now lives in New York with his wife Olga and their 10 year old daughter, Mira.
